What is Scouting?

The Scout movement is now just over 100 years old, having started with a camp on Brownsea Island in 1907, led by Lord Baden-Powell.

It is currently active in 216 countries with a world-wide membership of about 28 million.

In the UK there are about 400,000 members. Find out more...

The movement provides for young people between the ages of 6 and 25 years old, being run by fully trained and CRB checked adults of all ages.

There are separate sections for age groups within this range. Find out more...

What are the benefits of being a member?

The Scout movement exists to promote the development of each member.

Personal development means promoting the physical, intellectual, social and spiritual well-being of the individual, helping them achieve their full potential.

In Scouting, we believe that young people develop most when they are 'learning by doing,' when they are given responsibility, work in teams, take acceptable risks and think for themselves.

This development is supported by a series of badges and awards that members can earn individually or as a Group. This encourages the members to develop interests and skills.

The emphasis is on adventure and fun, with plenty of outdoor activities and camps.

In our case, as a Sea Scout Group, we encourage members to get involved in water activites such as canoeing.

How can parent's help the Group?

The Scout Association provides a lot of ideas and information. Find out more...

Our Group hopes that parents will support their children who are members.

This can be just by encouraging them in their badgework and attendance at camps and events that the group arranges.

There are always opportunities for parents to get involved in fund raising for the Group, or to become members of the Group Executive Committee or become helpers and maybe even leaders in one of the sections of the Group.

As you will see under the section pages, we are in need of additional adult leaders and/or assistants in the sections.

Can you help?

How do I find out more before I decide?

This may all seem a bit daunting for those with no previous involvement with Scouting.

There may also be issues of preconceptions about what Scouting is about...... it is continually seeking to adapt and develop to the changing needs of young people.
