GroupPhotoThe Basingstoke Sea Scout Group is based at the Roger Morris Centre,Eastrop Way, Basingstoke. The Group was formed in 1976 and was originally based at the Rucstall Community Centre, Holbein Close, Black Dam, which is why the Group was originally called the Black Dam Sea Scout Group.

We are a mixed Group and take in both boys and girls. We were the first Group in Basingstoke to take in girls back in the early 1990's.

How are Sea Scouts different from other Scouts?

There are nine Scout Groups in the Basingstoke East Scouting District, but we are the only Sea Scout Group.

So what is the difference between Scouts and Sea Scouts?

We are all members of the Scout Association and follow the same Scout training programme as all other Scouts. However, our uniform is different to land Scouts and we try to do more water activities and our ceremonies have a nautical flavour to the them, such as at flag break, we "Pipe" the colours.

Some Sea Scout Groups in the country have received 'naval recognition' from the Royal Navy, which requires a Group to demonstrate a continually very high standard of water activities.

International Role

Since 1992 the Group has taken on an International role, with camps taking place in France, Holland, Florida USA, as well as St.Petersburg and Moscow in Russia.

We have a twinning link with the Argonauts Scout Group, based in St.Petersburg, and in 1996 we hosted a group of twenty Russian Scouts and leaders from St.Petersburg, who joined us in Basingstoke for a two week camp. Members of the Group joined a District visit to Russia in 1998.

The Group attended the Haarlem Jamborette, based near Amsterdam, Holland in 1999 and 2003. This event involved about 3000 Scouts from 20 different countries.

Photos and reports can be found in the Events section.

The structure of the Group

The Group consists of an Executive Commitee

and three active sections:

Sea Beaver Scouts , Sea Cub Scouts and Sea Scouts.
