Group Camp - Longridge Aug 2009

Camp Report

The Group enjoyed 6 action packed days based at Longridge Water Activity Centre, a fitting venue to mark the Centenary of Sea Scouting.

HawaiianGroupMany thanks to Nick (GSL) and Myra who looked after the catering for the Cub section and group meals.

Thanks also to Colin who led the kayaking sessions, assisted by Richard, Gary and Chester.

Due to the Thames flood warnings and campsite conditions, camp was abandoned on Thursday evening instead of leaving on Friday. This meant that the equipment needed to be collected later.

However, there was a great response from parents to come back to the site with us on the Saturday to take down tents and load up the van which was really appreciated by the leaders.

In spite of the rainy periods, all of the plannned activities took place with many great achievements. A special mention for the Cub section where every member made it to the top of the high climbing tower, well done !

One of the highlights of the week was the Hawaiian barbeque night on Wednesday, see below for details.

An outline of the week's events :

Saturday :

arrived after lunch; pitched camp, got to grips with pitching the brand new larger tents

tour of the site

Sunday :

Kayaking : various sessions on the water with Colin and crew.

Bellboating : Cubs learning teamwork on the water, and getting a bit wet !

Funfair : short visit to the funfair in Marlow in the evening.

Monday :

Kayaking : further sessions on the water with Colin and crew. With guest appearances by Gareth, Alick and David

Adventure Trail : Cubs tackling the obstacle course

Tuesday :

Visit to Hellfire Caves : tour of the man-made cave system followed by a climb to the top of the hill to see the church and grounds. Well done to the leaders for reaching the top with only a few stops to catch their breath !

non-stop cricket : following dinner the whole group took part, and in the dimming light Davids brave run chase was only ended by Amys great catch (luck or great judgement ?)

Wednesday :

Kayaking, 2 star group on the water with Colin.

Raftbuilding : Rest of the Group made and then raced their rafts across the river

Dragon Boating : Most of the Group (20 people) teamed up for a (fairly) co-ordinated paddle up the river.

Climbing Tower : The Scouts tackled the very impressive tower with great success and in one case, noise (Tom....) !

The Hawaiian barbeque

While the group changed into their hawaiian outfits and put on the grass skirts and flower leis, skilfully crafted by them from paper and card during Monday under the expert guidance of Akela, Nick and Myra prepared the barbeque

The scene was set with a series of lamps made from plastic cups and tea-lights strung from the washing lines!

After a limbo dancing competition, the group sat down to enjoy the feast. A major highlight being the fryed pineapple rings with squirty cream.

It was also, by happy coincidence, Akelas birthday and a surprise pair of cakes was produced for her.

Thursday :

Sailing: Scouts enjoyed a leisurely two hour trip down river with an activity that they had not done before.

Bellboating : Cubs enjoyed another session, avoiding getting wet this time !

Rowing: Scouts took on the task of learning how to handle oars and working in unison

Climbing Tower : The turn of the Cubs to tackle the tower, and with great success.

Water Pistol Fight : And finally, with an array of water pistols ( or in some cases, cannons ! ) a large number of the group got very wet for the final time in a chaotic fight !
